Content creator Girl and a Drill repurposed a pair of IKEA CD racks to craft a sleek storage solution for her foyer. in the entryway area. The build intended to hide a wall-mounted unit that concealed outdated gas piping. Rather than leaving it visible, she fashioned a shelf that sits directly atop and alongside the existing structure.
The idea came to her when she realized she could reuse the IKEA CD shelves sitting in her garage. She noted that few people need CD shelves these days, and decided to repurpose them for this project.
Girl and a Drill sketched out her design, recorded the measurements, and cut the CD racks to size. She then assembled a new frame using wood glue, screws, clamps, and brackets, and fixed it in place onto the wall. The unit was painted and custom doors were built from strip wood and faux rattan.
The result was a sleek and minimalist entryway drop zone. The rich blue chalk paint gave the upcycled unit a bold and colorful look, while the faux-rattan fronts added texture and a natural feel. This design can be customized to fit individual styles and spaces.
This IKEA hack can be useful for solving various storage problems, not just hiding pipes in a small entryway. The slim design can fit a super-narrow hallway, and can even serve as a shallow bookcase for a tight space.
